While googling Snow Beach.. ( I was bored and figured I’d get a laugh out of the next idiot to pay $4k for on one Ebay) I somehow found this.

It inspired me to maybe actually write something..

Then realized when I got to the end it was written by the lil’ homie $port..

well said..

Follow-up thoughts to come.

Let me get to the point. I’m sick of the following words: hype, hypebeast, and hipster. It’s amazing how people can so freely use those three words to try and classify pretty much everything going on these days. The backlash against the fly shit these days is unprecedented. And while I can honestly say that I can see some reason for it, the majority of it is usually unwarranted. As a guy in my position, I kinda feel the need to speak up for my well-dressed, well-read brethren.

Be clear: I don’t think every quintuple-colored sneaker is fire and no I don’t really care for Supreme much, either. My disdain goes to those who try to give those who honestly like what they wear/listen a piece of hell for their choices, whether it be because they’re uncomfortable in their own skin or they’re actually jealous because they couldn’t muster up the funds to grab their own Dinosaur Jr.’s. You know the type and you know the rhetoric. Once the topic of music, clothes or ideaology as a whole comes about, they go into the spiel about how they ‘don’t follow sheep’ or they don’t ‘buy into hype’, blah blah blah. They’ll stick to the story about how they’re so much of an independent thinker and nobody, not even Kanye West, will tell them what to buy.

When I hear and see this type of behavior, I both giggle and sneer. The giggles are for the fact that the person who’s stating all this poop are usually awfully-dressed suckas whose poor choices in clothing are only worsened by the 37 ‘no homos’ they used in the one sentence. Okay we get it, you don’t like certain things. Great. But don’t dare try and pretend that every conclusion you’ve arrived at in your lifetime, albeit fashion, music, or relationships- you’ve arrived there with no help at all. Nas said it best, ‘No idea’s original’. And whether you like it or not, we all have somebody or something we look to for a bit of inspiration.

Yes, there’s a throng of us that choose not to buy general release stuff and we appreciate De La Soul over Juelz Santana. That’s just the way it is. We’re sorry that we like our $300 denim to you know…fit us, as opposed to wearing it 5 sizes bigger. However, none of shit defines us. Spark up a conversation with us. You’ll be amazed at the things we’ve seen and what we know about the world itself. Though we prefer certain tastes and labels, we know that there’s a world outside of limited edition garments.

I can’t side with the people who only partake in certain activities for either a) wanting look cool, b) doing their damndest to be different, or c) not knowing any better. If you have the cash and the means to stand on queue for 6 hours in the name of a pair of kicks, do you. But don’t thumb your nose at the ones who didn’t do it because while you may be the man or woman of the moment, them shits don’t make you any better than the next. And after you unDS those, then what? You may have burned down the ‘What did you wear today?’ thread and broke a couple necks in the process…but that’s pretty much it. And the funniest thing to me is that most of these characters couldn’t punch their way out of a paper bag. I remember being on a message board laughing my ass off because all of these kids who were talking all this shit looked like a bully’s wet dream. And I know a few cats who would gladly snatch that CDG right off your back with little or no provocation.

Another peeve of mines is this entire thing with titling music as ‘hipster hop.’ C’mon man, seriously. I guess because some of these people can actually rap without mentioning a Heckler and Koch and green rain, that makes them lesser than? On the flip side, piss to the acts trying to capitalize off of us who are longing for better. And rocking a pair of Jordan III’s while rapping over a Dilla beat doesn’t mean you’re anybody’s savior. So chill. What people fail to realize is that this group of eclectic young people with penchants for books and cartoons has always been around. Even before Lupe. And when you all jump off of the MTVU bandwagon, we’ll still be us.

The biggest victim of ‘hype’ is the one who swears off something without giving it a chance, simply because somebody else enjoys it. It’s one thing to honestly dislike. It’s another thing to dislike for the sake of being an ‘individual’. And I can’t forget about the trend jumpers. You know them, too. The one who dresses by the year. The one who’s this big Blu fan out of nowhere when they were just playing ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ two days before. I’m all for evolution and discovery. But straight-up posing gets the bozack. It always has.

What’s funny is, I’m typing this while Jay Electronica’s ‘Victory Is In My Clutches’ is on repeat. And according to Just Blaze, Jay doesn’t even know what a ‘hipster’ is, so up yours, S.O.U.L. Purpose. Does that, coupled with my love for hip-hop that pre-dates 106th & Park and my love for a good 80% of stuff spawned by Nigo, make me a hypebeast?? Nope. All it means is that I’m in a great place with my tastes and by this time next year (unless by some act of God) I’ll be on the same shit.

Pretty much everything I’ve said means nothing. The arts are all subjective and pretty much everything is dictated by opinion. I’m no better than anybody. I just like what I like and when I like something, I’m into it heavily. But that doesn’t stop me from respecting anybody else’s choices in life. But the next time you try to rip somebody for what they’re doing by calling them a hypebeast or a hipster, be careful. They just may have a word for you, hater.

  2. So… I think $port was on point, however to S.O.U.L Purpose’s defense, it gets tiring to see a bunch of clowns and non brain having dudes rocking the Islamic Keffiyeh scarfs and have no knowledge of the culture or religion at all! And as far as the jeans. Wearing fitted jeans is cool, I have no problems with that, but men wearing tight jeans and making excuses for it (”Man I’m getting too old for this baggy stuff”) is completely corney and a lil bit on the sweet side. And as far as the whole hipster thing, we have too much followers and not enuff TRENDSETTERS. There are some people who are genuinely into old-school fashion and collect vintage sneakers and things of that nature, and that’s cool. However, just like the Jim Jones style of clothing,it gets annoying to see people follow trends just because it’s the cool thing. But that’s life. Shout to the Retro Kids! The true trendsetters. On that note I say peace. With a treat below to express my feelings.

$port: Commentary spit so deep from within your scene (whatever you want to call it) your lost in the ridiculousness of it. Its absurdity is over your head, and the writing while indeed competent, it’s just that of a young man rationalizing his insecurities through layers and layers and layers of “premier” and “coture” clothing.

The good news is we’ve all (well most) been there . eg. aligning ourselves with a particular movements/groups to feel accepted and even superior to others who aren’t as cool or “in the know”.

So until the next scene rolls around you’ll be confidently strutting your stuff in gear that while its nothing for “Ju$t Blazer$” to cop is breaking you and/or your mommas back to flaunt.

…that is until the next scene rolls around and you’ll either be an early adopter - “claiming you repped it all along” or hating on it because your older and it’s wack - and there’s a good chance both will be true. If you just sit back the game’s all see through. And so are you.

Just: I beg to differ, not only did Jay say it best but it was co-sponsored by You - “No matter where you go, you are what you are player

I agree with a lot of sh*t you said.

If something is Really poppin like say…Bapes or Jordans…I won’t wear them. But I won’t say “them sh*ts is ugly.” I wanted to cop the Orange Retro 8’s…But because they’re Jordans…And I know everyone and they mom is gonna be wearing them…I refrained from buying.

  11. I actually agree with most of this even if I’m not really a fan of the so-called hipster artists. Particularly “rocking a pair of Jordan III’s while rapping over a Dilla beat doesn’t mean you’re anybody’s savior.” It’s funny because so much of the underground shit that’s supposed to save Hip Hop just doesn’t say much. Where’s the social commentary? Why is it that the Game is the only one talkin about ‘fuck the police’ after all the Sean Bell shit? Seriously the Game? Anyway I’m sick of hearing everybody talkin about their clothes, whether they’re Jordans or $300 skinny jeans. Just make some good music and talk about shit that matters.

  17. Lol what the hell is a hypebeast? Never heard that term until now… I also hate swag and its deritatives (spellcheck?)… its just a gross word… But a fist pump to $port! Ya damn right!

  18. I was kind with dude until he quoted Nas. That quote is damn true, but Nas shouldn’t be the one quoted as saying it. He probably heard that shit from his moms and thought it’d be cool to say or something.

I agree that those who hate what’s hot and whats ‘mainstream’ are usually sheep themselves, just to the trend of hating trends. But you can’t deny that a lot of shit that ends up popular is just plain retarded. I swear, some designers honestly just make the wackest shit they can come up with just to see if dumb rich people will buy it (and they usually do).

Me, I’m into a little of everything. You couldn’t take a look at me and be able to categorize me, because I’ve been influenced by many different styles, and many different cultures. Musically I listen to everything, clothing wise I wear what looks good, regardless of whatever preconcieved notion some douche is gonna have about me because I wear it. Because I define me.

That’s one of the major problems with society. Nobody stands on their own anymore, and everybody is fake. We need more hip-hop. Y’all need to listen to some KRS-One.

P.S. Never use the word ‘hater’. Almost everybody that uses that word is making an excuse for why they suck. The shittier the rapper, the more often they use the word. Think about it.

  19. I dont care either way. I just like what I like and always have. Also get the fact that I listen to Blu but I will also be the first to tell you ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ is a classic. I am also Hispanic, if that means anything. I think

    $port,
Firstly, I appreciate that you wrote a well thought out comment rather than overly using the generic terms “wack” & “hater”… Much of what you said is undeniably understandable if Lesson B was not part of the equation… I urge you to really peep the whole Operation F.L.I.P. (Lesson A + Lesson B)… You will hopefully overstand that I was addressing the very people you mentioned in part of your comment:
“…And I can’t forget about the trend jumpers. You know them, too. The one who dresses by the year. The one who’s this big Blu fan out of nowhere when they were just playing ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ two days before. I’m all for evolution and discovery. But straight-up posing gets the bozack. It always has.” ($port)
That right there was a big part of what I was getting at! You hit the nail on the head! I’m down w/ some Lo Lifes… I’m crazy cool w/ mad kids who rock throwback gear… I got peoples that’ll knock your socks off w/ their sneaker collections… I’m friends w/ “hipsters” who’ve been ride or die w/ that shit for years… But one thing is constant amongst all of them: They care enough about Hip Hop to learn, study, research, & remain humble students of this culture! Preservation! They give a shit! They were brought up on it & have, are, & will pay dues… It’s wayyy deeper than clothes homie! I’m sure you know that… I don’t care if you wear “bell bottom Brady Bunch Trousers” w/ a red & white helicopter hat & suede fish tank boots…but if you claim to be part of this culture, then do your best to dedicate yourself… Respect the architects! Operation F.L.I.P. was not done out of hate at all… Rather out of love for a culture we ALL contributed to…

Quick story (I mentioned this in a recent interview): I was w/ one of my boys in a club in NYC (held about 1000 people) a while back & in walks Kool Herc… He was there for hours in plain sight & nobody but me & my boy recognized him! Now if you don’t see something wrong w/ that on several levels, I don’t know what else to say… & I got many stories of that calliber (I hope I spelled that right)… See I’m a young dude but I stay doing my homework & building w/ people… Each one teach one, reach one another… I didn’t come up w/ Operation F.L.I.P. overnight…
Look at it from this point aswell $port… If you go to a young rocker kid & ask him about AC/DC or Pink Floyd, 9 outta 10 times they gonna break it down… But go to one of these young bandwagon trendy throwback “Hipster Hoppers” (I had to go in…) & ask about Treacherous Three or Crash Crew or Mantronix or X Clan or Jungle Brothers (the list goes on & on & on)… 9 outta 10 times they’ll be dumbfounded! I’m not sayin’ heads gotta be Hip Hop nerds but damn at least do the knowledge a little bit! LOL! I’ve spoken to young kid after young kid for a few years now & they are mostly oblivious! So I figured I speak in the language they understand… What they fiend for…& that’s beef… I mean just check Lesson B for details & hopefully it’ll all make more sense…
Elvis, John Lennon, & Frank Sinatra were revered ’til the day they died…but w/ our Hip Hop pioneers? Good luck!
I hope my true intensions have translated through Lesson A, B, the press release, & this statement… GOD BLESS… ONE LOVE…

I find it funny how people are commenting that they think the post is all true, but they say they won’t buy shoes that are popular even if they like them. Thats pretty much missing the whole point which is: Don’t go out of you’re way to be different because you just look as rediculous as the people trying so hard to be “mainstream”. To quote a quote from this “No ideas original” this is so true. Sure this is very detailed but even the post isn’t original it’s just elaborating on the idea of being yourself. If you don’t go along with what’s hot even if you like it then you’re still following a trend just a different one you’re still being manipulated by the media just in a different way. And that’s about all.

You are all over-thinking this. Be yourself. Wear what you like and be happy. Don’t worry so much about what everyone else is thinking, saying or doing.

Use that energy to budget your spending, because giving ALL your money to Nigo and Nike is getting you and the rest of the world nowhere. There’s so much more you can do with your money.

Buy some property. Invest. Spend money and time to educate yourself. Help others in need - thousands of people have died and are suffering because of natural disasters just in the last week or so in Asia. Spend money on real hip hop (especially indie) so the real artists can keep making music.

I’m a big proponent of just doin’ me and not worrying about who rocks what. If I like it, and I think it falls in line with my steez then I’m down. That goes for gear, music, whatevs. No elitism over here personally. HOWEVER, two random points: (1) With the internet and 24/7 youtube and blog coverage of every facet of pop culture most are just sheep, following the latest trends blindly. One season it’s all skate posers, then next, 80’s neon everything…no wonder some try to differentiate themselves from the pack by being ultra-elite, “hypebeast” or whatever. I’m less worried about hipster haters and more worried about clones. If I go out and everybody trying rock SB’s with they Crooks&Castle sh1t, then it’s natural to go out of your way and jump on some Japanese sh1t or something you not going to see and think of yourself as elite. Why would anybody want to look like everybody else? (2) As far as hip hop, it’s dead anyway. WTF do I care if some corny whitepeople, or anybody else that some may identify as unqualified likes it? That’s all hip hop is now anyway. Everybody is qualified…its not underground…it’s pop and totally accessible. Except for a few, it’s all disco, or some straight corny baller/gangsta fakery. Don’t get me wrong, it kills in the club. What else you going to listen to while you dancin, drinkin, smokin’, poppin…but come on, the latest song with accompanying dance doesn’t necessarily qualify as real music to me. Same thing with broke-@ss, studio gangstas tryin to convince me of how much they ball and how hard they are. GTFOH
